Hummer – depending on your interests, the name will bring to mind either the standard transporter of the US military (which is actually the humvee or HMMWV High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) or a machine which is regarded as the most ‘macho’ of SUVs? The Hummer was actually developed as a civilian version of the military transporter that could be considered the spiritual successor to the Jeep.A few early-generation Hummers made their appearance here during the 1990s but their size limited their appeal, not to mention the huge engines also meant roadtax would be very costly each year. However, the H3 version introduced in 2006, which is the smallest in the range, had a smaller engine displacement which made it more acceptable outside the US market. Initially, it was 3.5 litres (in-line 5-cylinder) but customers were unhappy with the performance so the engine size was boosted to 3.7 litres with 242 bhp.
